DNC Night 2 – Former U.S. AG Eric Holder;

Eric Holder pushed a message unity and American greatness, addressing Trump’s campaign motto of “Make America Great Again” by saying “America is already great.”

Holder said the U.S. needs to reform its criminal justice system, as well as reducing mandatory minimums and making the prison population smaller. Holder said despite “the other party’s nominee,” violent crime has dropped under President Obama. He said the justice system still needs to address racial discrepancies in sentences, where blacks serve 20-percent longer sentences than whites.

The former attorney general said 18 year olds should automatically be registered to vote upon their birthday.

“Too many people have fought too hard, taken bullets for the younger generation to sit this one out. To sit out the revolution we started 240 years ago just a short distance from this spot.”

Pittsburgh Police Chief Cameron McLay followed Holder. “Our brothers in blue do the hardest job in this country today – going to work and not knowing they may come home.”

McLay discussed recent shootings of black men by police officers.

“As an officer who has served more than 30 years, we can respect our officers while at the same time pushing for these important reforms. We can do both and we will do both.”
