Golf icon Jack Nicklaus to receive Congressional Gold Medal

jack Torry in our Washington Bureau is reporting that Jack Nicklaus, who attended Ohio State and won 18 major golf championships during his professional career, will receive the Congressional Gold Medal in a Capitol Hill ceremony next month.

House Speaker John Boehner, R-West Chester Twp.; House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., and Senate Minority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., will take part in the ceremony.

The Gold Medal is the highest civilian award that Congress can award to a person. Congress last year approved a resolution awarding the medal to Nicklaus. It was sponsored by Rep. Pat Tiberi, R-Genoa Twp., and signed by President Barack Obama.

“When most people hear the name Jack Nicklaus, they think of the mark Jack has made on the game of golf,” Boehner said. “To us Ohioans, he’s much more than that – he’s one of our own. I look forward to celebrating Jack’s many accomplishments, and I thank my colleague from Ohio, Pat Tiberi,

for sponsoring the bill that made this possible.”
